This it seems makes it imperative to be concerned about our food choices to
ensure that the diet will deliver the array and balance of nutrients to provide a
nutritionally adequate diet based upon the needs of the body which again has
been proven for many years. The problem has been that the needs of the body
for good health are not well known by many of the medical professionals as this
is not generally a requirement in their studies.
In fact, there is a great dilemma when reviewing the composition of the healthy
body and comparing that to the composition of the various foods based upon
the USDA nutrient Database. The dilemma is seen upon reviewing their
recommendations for the healthy foods and what is said to provide a healthy
diet.
There is absolutely no way their recommendation for a healthy diet can be reconciled to meet the needs for a healthy body based upon their data!

As a food scientist and nutritionist I couldn't care less as to the particular
dietary practices parents choose to follow for themselves or their children.
There are many choices available such as following the recommendations of
What I have found to be most interesting is that much of the research on diets
and health is concerned with specific nutrients and their contribution to health
or diseases. The literature seldom considers the overall need based upon
the total body.
My first question is, How can this be?
In order to adequately answer that question we must consider the several
factors involved in dietary practices and the reason for the food choices. I
certainly recommend logic based upon facts rather than emotional factors.
The highest priority should be to ensure the nutritional adequacy for the
child. Anything less will lead to deficiencies and thus some type of disorder is
certain to follow. The easiest way to make sure the diet is adequate is to
learn what the body needs based upon what it contains and then select the
foods and/or supplements necessary to achieve that goal..

The source for this information is easily available on the USDA web site and can be found by
going to USDA SR 22 for the composition of about 10,000 foods.
The second source for information is again the USDA web site where you can find a 38 page
report on Choline, a very important vitamin for brain health that relates to the composition
of many foods for several of the brain nutrients.
